Fifteen years ago, Celeste's gambling-addicted husband sold their daughter Yvaine to settle his debts, leaving Celeste to watch helplessly as Yvaine was taken away. Their eldest son, unwilling to let his sister go, pursued her alone and disappeared. Yvaine, suffering from amnesia after a car accident, was rescued by Sienna Reid, who took her in. Fifteen years later, Celeste, now divorced, adopted Gwen out of pity. Gwen seems innocent but is deceptively deep. Disliking the impoverished yet studious Tully Reid, Gwen bullies her mercilessly. Raised indulgently, Gwen cares little for the poor and manipulates her mother into aiding her unwittingly, further straining Celeste's relationship with the Reid siblings. Throughout these years, Celeste never stopped searching for her children, unaware they were nearby all along.
