Village schoolteacher Eugene Short divorces his wife Jennifer Wilcox after a dispute over using their savings to save his feverish student, Marvin Nielsen. Though Marvin survives, the delayed medical treatment damages his corneas. Eugene chooses to donate one of his own corneas to Marvin. Gustaf Calder, a corrupt businessman eyeing the school property, falsely offers to pay for the surgery while actually manipulating Marvin to falsely testify against Eugene, resulting in Eugene’s imprisonment on corruption charges. Twenty years later, Eugene’s former student Beverly Armstrong becomes the president of Apex Group. Having searched for Eugene for years and believing Marvin had already found him, Beverly awards Marvin a $30 billion contract. However, at the thanksgiving banquet, Marvin denies knowing Eugene and even turns against him. Upon learning the truth, Beverly takes decisive action against Marvin and Gustaf to avenge Eugene.
